Origin of the name Nevada - Nevada is from the Spanish word meaning "snowcapped".

Elko Transportation - Elko is the largest city between Salt Lake City and Reno located along Interstate 80. Passenger service to Elko is available on Greyhound Lines, Amtrak's twice-daily California Zephyr, and from SkyWest, which serves Elko Regional Airport from Salt Lake City.

To drive from Los Angeles, California to Reno, Nevada the direction traveled is to the west.

Climate - Nevada is made up of mostly desert areas, where temperatures can reach up to 110 degrees Fahrenheit in short, hot summers and can reach as low as 20 degrees in long, cold winters. Nevada rarely has any precipitation through out the year, but rain lies along the lee side of the Sierra Nevada Range.

The Virginia City steam train still operates and was featured in the Imax project "Mark Twain's America." The "steam train" is a modern-day tourist train and does not link back to the original Virginia & Truckee RR which had its last run to Virginia City in 1938.

The first community college in Nevada opened in Elko in 1967. Great Basin College was the forerunner of a statewide system associated with the University of Nevada.

Nevada is almost entirely within the Basin and Range Province, and therefore is broken up by many north-south mountain ranges. Most of these ranges have inland-draining (unconnected to the ocean by waterways) valleys between them, which belies the image portrayed by the term Great Basin.
